Looking into early accomplishments,

When it comes to Mayor Isko Moreno's early accomplishments and popularity,

After only a few days in office, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso cleaned up the city's bustling streets, took steps to preserve the city's cultural heritage, and issued a warning to schools about class suspensions.

Moreno kept his constituents informed about these initiatives through his social media profiles and periodic press briefings.

The most recent of these was when he found the Andres Bonifacio monument at Lawton to be misused due to the unpleasant sight and smell of excrement around it.

“That is the office of the mayor, the seat of power of the City of Manila. Tapos eto, amoy tae rito. Nagkalat,” Moreno said.

This was just among the several reforms and actions he made for the city as part of fulfilling his vows of addressing the pressing woes of Manila during the campaign period.

MANILA, Philippines — The Manila City government on Monday formally turned over 229 townhouse style units to its indigent owners in the slums of Baseco, Tondo, through a project called “Basecommunity”.

Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso led the turnover ceremony of the housing units, with a gentle warning to recipients to take good care of the units.

“Ako ay naniniwala na para maibalik ang dignidad sa pagiging mahirap, ikaw ay magkaroon ng sarili mo na masasabi mong iyo,” the local chief executive said during a speech.

(I believe that having a home that a poor person can call his own raises their dignity.)

“Alagaan n’yo ito, ‘wag n’yong bababuyin. ‘Di baleng mahirap tayo, ‘wag tayong maging dugyot,” he added.

Manila is one of the most populated cities in Metro Manila. With some residents unable to afford proper housing, disadvantaged families resort to living as informal settlers under bridges, near riverbanks, or on the streets. In an effort to provide decent housing for ManileƱos, the city is currently looking to complete three housing projects: Tondominium 1 and 2Binondominium residential building, and the townhouse-style horizontal housing project BaseCommunity. Of these, the 15-storey Tondominum 1 near Vitas in Tondo is expected to finish first in early 2022.

The condomium-style housing features 336 two-bedroom units that are 44 square meters each. Its interiors, shown through a model unit, were revealed in a Facebook post by the Manila Public Inform

ation Office on May 24.

The Binondominium 1 will be a 15-story building with a total of 126 units. Each unit will have an area of 40 square meters and have two bedrooms.

A budget of P401,250,000 was allocated for the project. Construction is expected to take a year and a half.

Domagoso said informal settlers have a right to a decent home.

“Kahit tayo ay squatter, ay hindi natin kailangan maging dugyot. May dignidad sa pagiging squatter dahil sila ay mga tao rin (Even if we informal settlers, we do not have to be dirty. There is dignity in being an informal settler because they are also people),” he said in his speech.

“I really wanted to be the best, I wanted to give you the best. Kung gagawin lang natin ‘yon, gawin na nating tama at disente (If we are going to do this, let’s make it right and decent),” he added.

Domagoso recalled that it was one of his campaign promises to provide housing for the homeless.

Isko Moreno says Bagong Ospital ng Maynila may be used as COVID-19 quarantine facility

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno at the Bagong Ospital ng Maynila

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso said the city government of Manila is preparing more quarantine facilities, including the Bagong Ospital ng Maynila, in case Covid-19 infections continue to rise in the coming weeks.

“Parang Shangri-la, ang ganda. Iniisip ko gawan ng emergency room at iba pang room,

pwedeng pang-quarantine,” Moreno said.

Moreno made the remark on Monday as he led Manila city officials in the inspection of the Bagong Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center as part of the preparation for additional quarantine facilities should the need arises.

Once tagged as one of the major polluters of Manila Bay, the 62-year-old Manila Zoo is nearing full rehabilitation and will soon be pronounced fit for both its residents and the visiting public.

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso recently visited the landmark formally known as the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden, which is scheduled for a soft reopening today with the families of construction workers as guests.

At the entrance, they will be greeted with a replica of Mali, the zoo’s famous elephant who has been a resident since 1977.

The zoo was established in July 1959 and the current major renovation is its first. Its new look is therefore a welcome development for its workers, including Edsel Isidro, 55.

Sewage treatment

Isidro, an animal keeper for the past two decades, recalled the old days when low cages had him passing through a cave-like structure while bent over and enduring the stink.

The water pressure was so weak that “no matter how diligent you are in washing the area, you really can’t clean it completely,” he said.

In 2019 Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu visited the zoo. He discovered that it did not have a sewage treatment facility and that untreated sewage was being dumped into an estuary connected to Manila Bay.
